Tibet! To Mt Everest and back

Leaving Shigatse, we headed towards the base camp on the China side of Mount Everest.  Lots more amazing views along the way!

There was a lot of roadwork in this part of the highway.  I was glad for the 4-wheel drive vehicle - the buses were having a lot of trouble on the detours.

Along the way, we stopped at the Sakya Monastery.

This was the highest pass on the trip - 17,218 feet!!

More roadwork

This was the first view of Everest, way in the distance on the left side of the photo.

One more night on the road before basecamp.  This was not the best lodging on the trip!  To get to the bathroom, I had to go outside and down between some of the buildings....

That's the entire room.  The walls are concrete covered with fabric.

And the bathroom....

And there it is!  Mount Everest!

The basecamp was pretty dismal looking....

The Chinese have a different name for Mt Everest, which is why the name on the sign doesn't say what you'd expect.

Some desert flowers
